Graduation Information

Graduate degrees are conferred by the Board of Trustees in August, February, and May. The deadlines to apply for graduation and submit degree requirements are published in the Graduate Student Handbook.

Commencement occurs annually in May. Detailed information can be found on the Commencement website; updates are made regularly as the event approaches. All students scheduled to graduate in May, and those who graduated the previous February and August are invited to attend.

All graduate degree candidates:

Apply to graduate in SIS. From the "Request" menu, select "Apply for Graduation" and choose your program and year. Update your diploma name and diploma mailing address. Print the graduation application PDF, complete the student section, and submit the application to your academic department for approval. Signed original forms are submitted to the Student Services desk in Dowling Hall.

Candidates will receive an email from the Office of Institutional Research with a personal link to the Graduate Exit Survey approximately 6 weeks before graduation. Completion of this survey is a graduation requirement and responses are confidential.

Students completing a thesis or dissertation:

Submit the required defense paperwork (linked below). Signed original forms are submitted to the Student Services desk in Dowling Hall; electronic signatures are only acceptable for committee members who were not physically present at the defense (see Graduate Student Handbook)
Submit your thesis/dissertation online to ProQuest/UMI. Formatting requirements and guidelines can be found in the Graduate Student Handbook; please also refer to the sample title pages.

Ph.D. candidates:

Submit the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) online. Save a copy of the certificate of completion for your records. SED information including purpose and confidentiality can be found here. The SED is not required for OTD candidates.

Certificate students:
