TuftsPlus Program

The Tufts experience doesn't have to end when an undergraduate earns his or her bachelor's degree. Through the TuftsPlus program, eligible undergraduates can continue on to earn a master's degree, and receive generous tuition scholarships.

The TuftsPlus program offers tuition scholarships to Tufts undergraduates who are admitted to a participating Graduate School of Arts and Sciences master's program. It also offers a streamlined application process: the GRE requirement is waived and only two letters of recommendation are required. The minimum GPA requirement for the TuftsPlus program varies by department (see below.)

Biology
The Department of Biology graduate program is arranged into six concentrations, each with an advisor and a core of faculty researchers. Befitting the integrative nature of biology, the department encourages interdisciplinary research and collaborations between academic fields.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in a coursework masters in:

  • Ecology, Behavior and Evolution
  • Genetics and Molecular Biology
  • Developmental Biology
  • Neurobiology and Animal Behavior
  • Cell Physiology
  • Conservation and the Environment

Child Development
The Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development graduate program integrates research and theory with practice. Concentrations are offered in clinical developmental psychology, cognitive development, educational studies, family studies, language and literacy, children with special needs, and new technologies and human development. Applied settings available to students include Tufts' two lab schools, hospitals, juvenile courts, and early intervention programs.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Early Childhood Education
  • The Master of Arts (M.A.)-Thesis
  • The Master of Arts (M.A.)-Applied

Eligible students must have a 3.25 GPA in their senior year.

Economics
The Department of Economics graduate program provides an understanding of the theoretical and empirical foundations of economics and the quantitative tools and training for academic research, doctoral studies, or a career as an economist.

Qualified applicants must have strong recommendations and a strong commitment to academic research and scholarship.

Education
The Department of Education graduate program examines current concepts in educational theory, practice, and research. Courses are complemented with fieldwork, an essential part of the program.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) for middle and high school Mathematics, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, English, Political Science/Political Philosophy, History, Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Latin and Classical Humanities;
  • the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Art Education program for licensure to teach in grades PK-8 or grades 5-12;
  • the Master of Science (M.S.) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and
  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Educational Studies.

Qualified applicants must have:

  • strong recommendations,
  • a senior year GPA of 3.25 or better in their major, and a strong commitment to education and public service.

The TuftsPlus program is also open to alumni applying to an MAT program in Education who are within 2 years of graduation from Tufts (i.e. for admission in fall 2014, TuftsPlus is open to alumni who graduated in 2012 and in 2013).

French
The Department of Romance Languages offers the master of arts degree in French language and literature. Students take ten upper-level courses in French literature in preparation for a two-part general examination that includes essay questions and an explication de texte. The program may be completed in one academic year combined with a summer.

  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in French

  • a GPA of 3.25 or better in their major

History
The Department of History graduate program emphasizes a comparative understanding of historical processes. The master's program prepares students for doctoral programs or enhances their work in schools, libraries, foundations, and museums.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in History
  • the Master of Arts (M.A.) in History and Museum Studies

Normally only history majors would be considered, but the department will consider applicants from other majors on a case-by-case basis. Qualified applicants must have strong recommendations, a GPA of 3.25 or better and a strong commitment to academic research and scholarship.

Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics graduate program prepares students for careers in fields including teaching, financial services, statistical research, medical technology, aerospace, and software development. Graduate students take required courses in real analysis, complex analysis, algebra, and geometry/topology. These classes can be complemented by advanced courses, which have recently included offerings in surface dynamics, smooth ergodic theory, mathematical neuroscience, algebraic geometry, and measure-theoretic probability.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Science (M.S.) in mathematics

Qualified applicants must have:

  • Strong recommendations
  • 3.25 GPA or better
  • By the time of application a substantial portion of the undergraduate math major requirements completed. This normally includes two of the following:

    Math 135
    Math 136
    Math 145
    Math 146
     
  • Completion of two of the following sequences:*

    Math 135-6
    Math 145-6
    Math 151-2
    Math 161-2

*This requirement must be met before starting the program and can be fulfilled through graduate courses.

Music
The Department of Music graduate program offers the unique opportunity to study broadly across four exciting sub-disciplines--composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, and theory--while receiving focused training in one of them. Advanced coursework and thesis research support is strong in Western classical music, African-American music, and World Music (Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and Latin America).

Open to qualified undergraduates seeking graduate studies in composition/theory, ethnomusicology, and musicology.

Qualified applicants must have strong recommendations and a GPA of 3.25 or better in their major.

Occupational Therapy
The Department of Occupational Therapy offers entry-level and post-professional master's degree programs. The entry-level program prepares students for occupational therapy careers as practitioners. The post-professional master's program offers therapists who have bachelor's degrees in occupational therapy an opportunity for specialization.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in the professional entry-level program in Occupational Therapy:

  • the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (M.S. in OT, no thesis)
  • the Master of Science, Occupational Therapy (M.S., OT, with thesis in biological science area)

Qualified applicants must have:

  • strong recommendations,
  • a senior year GPA of 3.25 or better in their major, and
  • prerequisites with a B- or better: two courses in the Social Sciences (e.g., Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development), two courses in the Biological Sciences, one of these having a lab, e.g.., Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, one course in introductory Statistics,
  • a demonstrated commitment to serving individuals or populations with personal or environmental challenges that affect their ability to participate in satisfying and productive lives
  • Certificate of hepatitis B vaccination series upon enrollment

Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning
The Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) offers two graduate public policy and planning programs. Our goal is the education of a new generation of leaders, "practical visionaries," who will contribute to the development of more just and sustainable communities.

The TuftsPlus program is open to qualified undergraduates interested in:

  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning
Qualified applicants must have:
  • strong recommendations,
  • a strong commitment to community and public engagement, and
  • relevant work experience, either during or – more likely – subsequent to college.
The TuftsPlus program is also open to alumni applying to an M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning who are within 2 years of graduation from Tufts (e.g. for admission in fall 2014, TuftsPlus is open to alumni who graduated in 2013 and in 2012).
