American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA): Regular Student Fellowship: Annual program to provide support for graduate students in classical and ancient Mediterranean studies and related fields who have, preferentially, completed at least one year of grad work. Fellowships available in archaeology, history and literature, art history and other fields. Graduate expected to be able to read French, German, ancient Greek and Latin as well as have a reading knowledge of modern Greek and Italian.

Camargo Foundation Fellowship Program: The Foundation maintains in Cassis, France, a center for the benefit of scholars who wish to pursue studies in the humanities and social sciences related to French and francophone cultures. The Foundation also supports creative projects by composers, writers, visual artists, photographers, film makers, and video artist. Applicants may include university and college faculty, including professors emeriti, who intend to pursue special studies while on leave from their institutions; independent scholars working on specific projects; secondary school teachers benefiting from a leave of absence in order to work on some pedagogical or scholarly project; graduate students whose academic residence and general examination requirements have been met and for whom a stay in France would be beneficial in completing the dissertation.

French Government Teaching Assistantships in English: Involves teaching English (predominantly oral English) and American culture in French primary and/or secondary schools to groups of pupils or to full classes alongside the class teacher. Conversational French is essential.

Fulbright Graduate Study and Research Abroad Scholarship: Proficient spoken and written French is required at the time of application. Scientific and artistic, as well as multidisciplinary studies are welcome. It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure affiliation with a French university or research center; evidence of this affiliation should be submitted with the application.

National Humanities Center Fellowships: The National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study. Applicants must hold doctorate or have equivalent scholarly credentials, and a record of publication is expected. Both senior and younger scholars are eligible for fellowships, but the latter should be engaged in research other than the revision of a doctoral dissertation. Fellowships are for the academic year (September through May). Scholars from any nation and humanistically inclined individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life, as well as from all fields of the humanities, are eligible. Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted. The following designated awards, however, are available for the academic year 2004-05: three fellowships for scholars in any humanistic field whose research concerns religion or theology; three fellowships for young scholars (up to 10 years beyond receipt of doctorate) in literary studies; a fellowship in art history or visual culture; a fellowship for French history or culture; a fellowship in Asian Studies.

Newberry Library École des Chartes Exchange Fellowship: This fellowship, open to graduate students, provides a monthly stipend and free tuition for an American graduate student at the E'cole Nationale des Chartes in Paris for a period of three months. The E'cole des Chartes is the oldest institution in Europe specializing in the archival sciences, including paleography, bibliography, textual editing, and the history of the book. Preference will be given to students from schools supporting the Center for Renaissance Studies.

Newberry Library Weiss/Brown Publication Subvention Award: Subsidizes the publication of a scholarly book or books on European civilization before 1700 in the areas of music, theater, cultural studies, or French or Italian literature. Authors must document that their projects have been accepted for publication and provide detailed information regarding the publication and the subvention request. Application instructions for this award are different than other awards.
