Ford Foundation: Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities: To increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties, to enhance diversity on campuses, and to address the persisting effects of past discrimination, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral fellowships to Ph.D. and Sc.D. students who are U.S. citizens from one of the following minority groups: Native American Indian, Alaskan Native (Eskimo or Aleut), Black/African American, Mexican American/Chicano, Native Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Rican. Must have completed all degree requirements except the writing and defense of the dissertation, including coursework, examinations, language requirements, etc.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowship in Biological Sciences: Awarded for up to 5 years of full-time study toward a Ph.D. or an Sc.D. in specified biological disciplines. Predoctoral fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study. College seniors, college graduates with no or limited postbaccalaureate graduate study in the biological sciences, and first-year graduate students may apply.

Javits, Jacob K. Fellowship Program: Fellowship for first year graduate students, graduate study leading to doctoral degree, or Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Twenty percent of fellowships awarded in social sciences, 20% in arts, 60% in humanities.

Liebmann, Dolores Zohrab Fellowships: are available for graduate students in any program of study in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or other formal professional training) who are U.S. citizens and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Candidates should be of outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their fields and who do not advocate or uphold the principles of communism. Each fellowship covers tuition, room and board, ordinary living expenses, and income taxes. Students must apply through the dean of their Graduate College; each university is limited to three applicants. Mayo, Clara Grants in Support of Masters’ Theses and Pre-Dissertation Research on Sexism, Racism, or Prejudice:: Preference given to students enrolled in a terminal master's program. Studies of the application of theory or the design of interventions or treatments to address these problems are welcome.

National Institutes of Health Individual Predoctoral Fellowships for Minority Students : The National Research Service Award Predoctoral Fellowship for Minority Students will provide up to five years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D. or equivalent research degree; the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree; or other combined professional degree and research doctoral degree in the biomedical, behavioral sciences, or health services research. These fellowships are designed to enhance the racial and ethnic diversity of the biomedical, behavioral, and health services research labor force in the United States. Accordingly, academic institutions are encouraged to identify and recruit students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups who can apply for this fellowship. Support is NOT available for individuals enrolled in medical or other professional schools UNLESS they are also enrolled in a combined professional doctorate/Ph.D. degree program in biomedical, behavioral, or health services research.

National Institutes of Health Individual Predoctoral Fellowships for Students with Disabilities: The NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship for Students with Disabilities will provide up to five years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D. (or equivalent research degree), or the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree (or other combined professional research doctoral degrees) in the biomedical or behavioral sciences. The intent of this Predoctoral Fellowship Program is to encourage students with disabilities to seek graduate degrees and thus further the goal of increasing the number of scientists with disabilities who are prepared to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral research.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (Including Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science Awards): Offers recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees in science education.

Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Predoctoral Fellowships: Intended to provide students the opportunity to work with members of the scientific staff of the Observatory and to make use of its research facilities to carry out the research required to complete their doctoral degrees. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program and have completed their course work and qualifying examinations for the doctoral degree.

Smithsonian Latino Studies Fellowship Program: Provides opportunities to US Latino/a predoctoral students and postdoctoral and senior scholars to pursue research topics that relate to Latino art, culture, and history. Interdisciplinary subjects are encouraged and can be undertaken at more than one of the Smithsonian museums and/or research units, and advised by one or more of the Smithsonian research staff members.

Social Science Research Council: Sponsors fellowship and grant programs on a wide range of topics, and across many different career stages. Most support goes to predissertation, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships, offered through annual competitions. Some programs support summer institutes and advanced research grants. Although most programs target the social sciences, many are also open to applicants from the humanities, the natural sciences, and relevant professional and practitioner communities.

Soros, Paul and Daisy Fellowships for New Americans: Candidates must be either holders of Green Cars, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents. The Program is open to individuals who retain loyalty and a sense of commitment to their country of origin as well as to the United States, but is intended to support individuals who will continue to regard the United States as their principal residence and focus of national identity. The applicant must either have a bachelor's degree or be in her/his final year of undergraduate study. Those who have a bachelor's degree may already be pursuing graduate study and may receive Fellowship support to continue that study. Individuals who are in the third, or subsequent, year of study in the same graduate program are not, however, eligible for this competition. Students who have received a master's degree in a program and are continuing for a doctoral degree in the same program are considered to have been in the same program from the time they began their work on their master's degree.
